Mashable: 5 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Music Collection

tidysongsPicture 2

Mashable wrote a post about “5 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Music Collection.”  In Josh Catone’s post he informs readers about some of the ways TidySongs can help: “TidySongs works really well and was able to identify and fix with surprising accuracy a large number of the songs in my music library that weren’t properly labeled. In addition to fixing song details, TidySongs can organize genres, fix duplicates, and find missing or incorrect album art.“  Read the full article here.

iTunes Issue?

itunes3We’ve had a few reports of people have trouble getting TidySongs and iTunes to talk nicely to each other. We suggested iTunes buy TidySongs some flowers, but that hasn’t helped. We are working on an update to fix these issues, but if you just can’t wait, here are some things to try:

“iTunes doesn’t find all my playlists and songs”

This is, most likely, because you keep your iTunes library on an external or networked drive and TidySongs found your old / unused iTunes library data file in the old default directory (”Music/iTunes/”).  You need to tell TidySongs to use your custom library location.  Do this: (1) Close TidySongs (2) Rename your un-used iTunes library file (”Musis/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml”) to something else (add an “_old” to the end of it) (3) Open TidySongs.  TidySongs will now ask your for the location of your iTunes library – point it to the one  you actually use.

“iTunes drops the connection to TidySongs too often”

This happens when you have a song in iTunes that doesn’t actually exist on your drive (iTunes has “lost” the song – it will usually show a exclamation! mark next to it).  Our next TidySongs update will automatically remove these missing songs for you.  Until then, make sure the songs you fix with TidySongs actually exist (either manually delete the missing ones yourself first, or create a custom playlist of songs you know exist and fix those first).

Installation Update

If you are having trouble with the installation of TidySongs and you are on Windows Vista or XP only (no Macs)
a) This is to fix the problem where the program doesn’t get past the message “Double-click TidySongs on your desktop” or something similar
b) This is NOT for people having duplicates or iTunes issues.

To get the program go here:
1) Make sure TidySongs is closed (restart computer to make sure)
2) Download: http://www.cloudbrain.com/files/TidySongsFix.exe
3) Run that program – TidySongs should start and function normally.

Tidy Your iTunes Library

TidySongs1Paul Taylor from the Financial Times compared TidySongs with TuneUp and found more advantages to fixing your music with TidySongs.  His conclusion: “I prefer TidySongs clean-up tool because of its speed and user- defined options and because of the duplicate-track elimination tool.”

Here is another excerpt from his article on some of the advantages of using TidySongs:

“The duplicate feature works well and I found it much faster and more accurate than using the built-in iTunes version. TidySongs also does an excellent job finding music tracks in its online database and automatically fixing misspelled and missing artists, album, name, track, year and genre details, and renaming artists and albums correctly. The developers’ claim that it matches about 85 per cent of the tracks it analyses seems about right to me.”

To Infinity… And Beyond!

graph

Wow. It’s only been a few days since we released TidySongs to the world and things are taking off. Just look at that graph of website traffic. I haven’t asked Chad to look up how many songs we’ve fixed so far, but I know it’s huge (this guy alone fixed over 6,000!). Thanks for all the feedback. Feel free to follow us on Twitter, become a fan on facebook or send us some email.

Also, I just posted the latest version – 1.555 – to the download page. This version fixes a minor issue that was causing some Windows Vista users to see a message reporting that Adobe Air was not installed. That’s been fixed. Let us know how it goes.

Helping Us Test

Picture 2Just posted the latest build of TidySongs: Version 1.552.  This version has a couple of minor tweaks but the big update is that it now creates and saves a log file that will help us with debugging should anything go wrong (though, hopefully the program works like a charm for you).  If you do experience any weirdness with TidySongs, please tell us about it by emailing kelly@tidysongs.com (we love to hear when it works too!).  If the program broke, please submit an error report (a link on the OPTIONS screen).  Thanks!

    Friends & Twitter Test

TidySongs2Because our Twitter followers are like friends and family… TidySongs is finally here! We are doing one last big testing push over the weekend to kick the tires and work out any final bugs. Please help us. Download the program and play around. If you find anything weird or broken (either with the app or on the website), email me at daniel@tidysongs.com or kelly@tidysongs.com and we’ll fix it first thing Monday (or maybe right away).

We’re really excited about this – TidySongs has been a long time in the making.  We’ll post more of the story on how we got here later.  Until then, please tell us what you think!

    Thanks!
